Redefine Your Neck And Jawline

Your neck contributes more to your appearance than most people realize. Deep creases, rolls, and a sagging jawline can make you look older, even if your face still gives off a youthful vibe. There are no exercises to target the neck and even a proper diet often can’t help. But a neck lift can.

Toronto neck lift expert Dr. Mike Roskies dedicated his life to providing his patients facial plastic surgery procedures so they can look and feel their absolute best. If you’re concerned about the story your neck is telling about your age and vitality, come see Dr. Roskies to review your options (surgical and non-surgical) for your face and neck.

How do I know if a Neck Lift is right for me?

If you have any complaints like those listed above, a neck lift might be your best option, especially if the appearance of your neck doesn’t match the look of your face.

The best candidates are at or near their ideal weight and have a solid understanding of the procedure and their realistic outcome. They are also nonsmokers who are free of any medical issues that may impair healing such as heart disease, diabetes, or bleeding disorders. We will thoroughly discuss your medical history, and Dr. Roskies will work with you and your primary care physician to ensure that you’re healthy enough for a neck lift procedure.

What is a Neck Lift?

Age, lifestyle, and genetics can all work against you when you’re trying to maintain a healthy appearance. While most people think about getting work done on their face, breasts, or body when they think of plastic surgery, sometimes your neck is the biggest giveaway of your true age. Heavy lines, fat deposits, and loose skin can all detract from your overall look.

A neck lift (also called a "lower rhytidectomy") aims to alleviate this problem by surgically reshaping the skin, fat, & muscles of the neck and jaw. In this procedure, Dr. Roskies strategically removes excess skin, removes or redistributes fat, and smooths out the contours along your neck and jawline. Neck Lifts can address concerns like:

  • Loose skin
  • Abnormal neck contours due to muscle banding
  • Early jowls or jowl lines
  • Double chin

When other treatments may be insufficient, Dr. Roskies can perform a “deep plane” neck lift or an “isolated” neck lift to include a chin implant, jaw contouring, and fat transfer to completely transform and redefine your jawline. Prior to your procedure for a neck lift Toronto Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Mike Roskies will determine the appropriate techniques needed to address your specific condition during your consultation. Ultimately, Dr. Roskies wants you to look and feel your best.

Neck Lift Procedure

—Mike Roskies, MD, MSc, FRCSC

Dr. Roskies performs neck lift surgeries as outpatient procedures. The exact duration of your procedure will depend on the extent of your treatment plan, but these surgeries generally require several hours of work to contour and revitalize your appearance. First, you will be sedated and placed under sedation anesthesia. There are two varieties of neck lifts performed.

1. Deep neck lift

Younger patients with genetic double chin fullness that does not change with weight are great candidates for sculpting of the central neck. This is done through one incision under the chin and frequently is combined with chin implant, liposuction, and buccal fat reduction. After removal of fat and muscle tightening, a defined chin and jawline are seen immediately.

2. Isolated neck lift (aka “Weekend Lift”)

This is the same as the deep neck lift but addresses early jowling and excess skin in older patients. A second incision is made behind the ear and the muscle is tightened in the middle and under the jawline.

If Dr. Roskies has recommended liposuction, it will also be performed at this point. Finally, Dr. Roskies will close the incisions, clean the affected area, and move you to recovery, where our team will monitor you until you are ready to have someone drive you home.

Neck Lift Recovery

Before your procedure, Dr. Roskies will provide you with any needed prescriptions (which often include pain medication and an antibiotic) as well as give you detailed instructions on best practices for managing your recovery. You can expect to see significant bruising and swelling initially after your procedure. Sometimes, a drain is placed to allow fluid to escape, and a compression garment is often employed.

It will be important to keep your head elevated and avoid twisting or bending the neck. You should also take care to avoid that any excessive force is applied to the incisions as this can cause the sutures to fail. This can include refraining from wearing any clothes that fit over your head. Typically, you should expect to rest for two to three weeks as you heal. Depending on your progress, you may be able to resume some normal activities (including going to work) after this time. However, full recovery may take a few months.

Neck Lift Results

Once your recovery is complete, you should notice a more well-contoured appearance to your neck and jawline.

These results should be permanent, but know that your results may vary. The natural aging process cannot be stopped, so ongoing skin protection — hydrating, nourishing, and protection from the sun — are critical for maintaining your rejuvenated appearance.
