What is a Deep Plane Facelift?

A deep plane facelift is an invasive cosmetic procedure that aims to revitalize your appearance through surgery. In this technique, we not only reposition your skin to eliminate wrinkles and lines, but we also go deeper to repair and strengthen the underlying tissues, too.

Often, it’s not just problems with the skin that lead to an aging, tired look. Fat deflation and weak muscles can also cause the skin to sag, lose resilience, and allow deep lines to form. A deep plane facelift addresses all of the issues — both below the surface, and those that are only skin deep.

Deep Plane Facelift vs. Traditional Facelift

As the name indicates, a deep plane facelift goes deeper than a traditional facelift. The traditional techniques focus on improving the appearance of the skin. Excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is tightened over the underlying tissues. The results can be impressive, as wrinkles, creases, and saggy skin completely disappear. However, the underlying fat and muscle tissues are not addressed, which could lead to a temporary result. It also has the risk of creating a “windblown” look if not done correctly.

The deep plane facelift remedies this problem by focusing first on the tissues beneath the skin. Muscle and facial tissues are redistributed, or reinforced to improve your face from within. While this technique usually requires a longer recovery time, the results almost always appear more natural, refined, & long-lasting than those from a traditional facelift.

How do I know if a Deep Plane Facelift is right for me?

—Mike Roskies, MD, MSc, FRCSC

A deep plane facelift is a significant surgery, so any potential patient must be in good health overall. You shouldn’t have any serious medical conditions (i.e., heart disease, cancer, or blood disease) as these can make surgery extremely risky. It’s also not recommended for anyone who smokes or has a history of scarring or bleeding disorders. This technique can be very effective for people with complaints like:

  • Skin laxity
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Smile lines
  • Marionette lines
  • Sagging cheeks
  • Jowls
  • Neck Bands

During your consultation for a deep plane facelift Toronto Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Mike Roskies will assess your condition, take note of your concerns, and work with you to craft a customized treatment plan that fits your life.

Following your procedure, you can expect to require three weeks to a month of healing before you feel “normal” again. You will likely stay overnight in our private surgical centre and go home to rest the next morning. You may experience substantial bruising, swelling, and discomfort during this time.

Dr. Roskies will prescribe all medications necessary to reduce your pain, as well as detailed instructions on how to care for your face as it heals. These instructions typically include the use of a compression garment, a drain, and neck support. Dr. Roskies recommends that patients plan to take two weeks off from work or social engagements as they heal. Likewise, patients should avoid strenuous activity for up to six weeks. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to assess your progress.
